The New York Giants roster is already being stretched, and now the secondary may have to answer another awkward question under the bright lights of Monday Night Football. Deonte Banks is questionable with a calf injury, Paulson Adebo is already out for the next four games after being placed on injured reserve, and that leaves rookie Colton Hood as the most obvious next man up opposite Greg Newsome II.
This is not the kind of setup a defense wants before facing the Rams at SoFi Stadium. Matthew Stafford does not need much encouragement at home either: last season he threw 22 touchdown passes and one interception in eight home starts at SoFi Stadium with a 114.7 passer rating. That is a brutal backdrop for a cornerback shuffle, especially for a rookie who may be asked to learn on the fly in primetime.
A secondary already under pressure
The larger problem is that the Giants are trying to patch together a unit that has already shown its nerves. In the season-opening victory over the Cowboys, Dru Phillips committed three pass interference penalties and the Giants fumbled four times. That is not the profile of a team that can afford unnecessary self-inflicted damage. It is why this week’s work on ball security, including the ball carriers practicing with a weighted ball, matters.
Greg Newsome II has tried to take the temperature down, saying, “Don’t make it bigger than what it is,” and adding that if Hood’s number is called, “he’ll be ready to go.” That is the right message publicly. But privately, the Giants know exactly what this means: if Banks cannot play, the rookie is being dropped into a difficult assignment against a passing attack that can stress you in multiple ways.
The Rams will not make this easy
Dru Phillips put it plainly when he said the Rams are “different” because they are “marrying up their runs with their passes,” and he is right. That is what makes this matchup so uncomfortable. It is not just about surviving Matthew Stafford throws. It is about staying disciplined when the Rams force you to defend every layer of the field and every tempo change that comes with it.
Dennard Wilson has already made the issue clear: “You don’t need to grab.” He also stressed that the Giants are in position at the top of routes, but have to clean up their hands and avoid giving officials a reason to intervene. That is a fair warning, but it is also a sign of where the danger lies. The Giants are defending aggressively, yet the line between physical and penalized can be painfully thin.
So the question is simple enough. If Deonte Banks cannot play, the Giants likely turn to Colton Hood opposite Greg Newsome II. But the bigger question is whether this roster, as currently built, can absorb another hit without the secondary becoming the story before Monday night is over.
