That matters because Ben was already introduced at the end of season 2 as someone from Amy’s past, and the premiere had viewers rejoining a relationship that the show had already established as part of its larger setup. A visible change to Ben’s face could have read like a new plot point; instead, it was a production adjustment carried into the episode.
Why Doc worked around it
Underwood said, “I am actually doing a different project that I can’t speak to right now. But it was mandatory that I had to be clean shaven for that.” That requirement forced the alteration, and Doc adapted around it rather than delay the season 3 appearance.
He added, “Doc was so open to it. Their production company, all of them and the producers said, ‘You know what? We love that you’re doing that so we’ll work around it.’” In practical terms, that means the show chose flexibility over continuity purity, letting Ben re-enter Westside Hospital without holding up the larger schedule.

That framing keeps the clean-shaven change from turning into a triangle distraction. Ben was there first in Amy’s past, and Underwood said he does not spend much time thinking about the larger love-triangle questions because he trusts the writers and producers to handle the season’s shape.

Underwood said he has not even filmed half of season 3 yet, and that he has the broad shape of the character’s arc without every detail. “And the specifics in terms of all the secrets … I don’t know. There’s a long way to go,” he said. For viewers, that means the appearance change is settled, but the rest of Ben’s season still sits ahead of the camera.
The clean-shaven choice is the useful part of the story: a visible on-screen change explained by off-screen work, handled without stopping the show. What happens to Ben after that will come from the episodes still to be filmed, not from the haircut itself.
