Karim Cassim has completed his move from Manchester City to Manchester United after the two clubs secured Premier League ratification for the switch. It is a notable academy transfer, both because it involves the Manchester rivals and because direct moves between the two are rare.
The 17-year-old midfielder had already begun to emerge at City. Last season he made his Manchester City Under-18 debut, and in March he started all three of England’s European Under-17 Championship qualifying matches against the Faroe Islands, Israel and Estonia.
A rare move between Manchester City and Manchester United
This is not a senior transfer, but it still carries obvious significance given the history between the clubs. Academy movement can happen more freely than first-team deals, yet direct switches from Manchester City to Manchester United remain unusual.
That is part of what makes Cassim’s case stand out. He is at an age where development is still the priority, but his background already shows why both clubs would see him as a worthwhile prospect.
City development, England recognition and an unusual pathway
Cassim’s progress at City was backed up by his England involvement, and his form had put him on the radar well before this move was completed. He was also an unused substitute when Manchester City beat Manchester United 2-1 in the FA Youth Cup final at the Joie Stadium in May.
There had already been signs that United were interested in strengthening their youth ranks. Since the summer, Manchester United had been reported to be working on deals for Cassim and David Eze, and the Cassim move is now done.
For United, it is another academy recruitment move with an eye on the future. For City, it is a reminder that even at youth level, the battle for top local talent can be fierce.
