Zinedine Zidane has wasted no time putting his stamp on France, and the message is already clear: Kylian Mbappé is not just the face of the team, he is the captain. Even more telling, Zidane wants him starting on the left, not locked into the centre-forward role that has become so familiar for club and country.
That is not a minor adjustment. It is a statement about hierarchy, structure and where Zidane believes France can get the most out of their biggest star. Mbappé has been used regularly as an out-and-out centre forward recently, but Zidane has made it plain that he sees more value in giving him space on the left and letting him attack from there.
A clear call on France’s biggest weapon
Zidane said it bluntly: Mbappé will be his captain. He also noted that the forward can play in all three attacking positions, before adding the important part — he prefers him on the left. That matters because this has been a running debate since Mbappé moved to Real Madrid in 2024, and it is the sort of debate that only gets louder when France are trying to set the tone for the 2026 World Cup cycle.
The numbers underline why Zidane is leaning this way. Mbappé made his France debut in 2017 and has built a record that screams elite output: 21 goals and 16 assists in 32 of his 106 national team appearances, plus 58 goals in 60 games at club level. He is not short on end product wherever he plays, but France are clearly trying to decide whether his best version is the one that starts wide and bursts in, or the one that stays central and absorbs more of the defensive attention.
For Zidane, the answer appears to be obvious. Put the captain on the left, give him the ball early, and let the rest of the attack work around him. It is a cleaner fit than forcing him into a role that may look neat on paper but is not necessarily his best use of space.
The leadership group and the bigger picture
Mbappé will not carry everything alone. Zidane has also named a four-man leadership group, with Ousmane Dembélé, Adrien Rabiot and Jules Koundé included alongside the captain. That is a useful detail, because it suggests France are not building a one-man hierarchy so much as a controlled leadership structure with Mbappé firmly at the top.
There is also no shortage of immediate tests. France are set to face Türkiye, Italy and Belgium twice during the September-October international break, which is hardly the sort of schedule that lets a new manager ease into things. Zidane’s first squad announcement has already told us plenty: he wants authority, he wants clarity, and he wants Mbappé to lead from the left rather than from the middle.
That may end up being the right call. It may also become one of those selections that defines whether Zidane’s France looks balanced or merely heavily decorated. Either way, the debate around Mbappé’s best role is no longer theoretical. Zidane has chosen a side.
