“Today, I’m announcing the conclusion and findings of an independent investigation into allegations regarding Lieutenant Governor Dale Caldwell,” Governor Sherrill said. She added, “I’m calling for his resignation and giving him until tomorrow to do so.”
Sherrill said the investigation found that Caldwell “engaged in serious, repeated violations of state policy and failed to uphold the responsibilities of his office.” She also said, “The substantiated finding of sexual harassment is extremely troubling.”
Chief Ethics Officer inquiry
Sherrill said the review was initiated by the Chief Ethics Officer and conducted by a respected former state Attorney General. She said, “This investigation was thorough and impartial,” and added, “The investigation fully examined the evidence, followed the facts, and protected everyone’s privacy.”
She said the ethical lapses persisted despite multiple warnings and trainings. The findings, as described by Sherrill, point to behavior that did not stop after prior intervention.
Administration standards
Sherrill said the resignation of the Lieutenant Governor is necessary and in the best interest of New Jersey residents. The immediate issue now is whether Caldwell leaves office by tomorrow, after a report that places his conduct and his ability to carry out the job under direct scrutiny.
