Patrick Vieira is set for his first official match in charge of Senegal when the Lions of Senegal face Mozambique on Friday at the Maputo National Stadium in their opening AFCON 2027 qualifier.
The timing adds a clear sense of urgency to Senegal's new era. Vieira had only overseen the team's first real group training session yesterday, leaving little room for a long build-up before the trip to Maputo. Even so, the coach made it clear he does not want his side thinking in terms of status or reputation.
"Being a favorite is a term that people on the outside generally use. Personally, it's not a word I particularly appreciate or like to use," Vieira said. Instead, he stressed that Senegal must approach Mozambique with "humility, seriousness, and concentration" if they want to start the campaign well.
That message fits the broader challenge in front of Senegal. The squad is missing Sadio Mané because of injury, which removes one of the team's most established attacking options. Vieira, though, pointed to the depth in the group and the opportunity for others to step forward.
"We have other players, including young talents who have a lot of quality and a real desire to perform at this level. It will be up to them to seize this opportunity and show what they are capable of," he said. He also described Mané as "an exemplary player, one of the greatest players and a true role model for youngsters," underscoring how significant his absence will be.
Moussa Niakhaté: no excuses despite the short turnaround
Moussa Niakhaté offered a similar view of the moment, acknowledging the pace of the turnaround without using it as a shield. He linked the qualifier to Senegal's recent World Cup disappointment, saying the team had already assessed that setback and now needed to move forward.
"We assessed the situation, and it was a failure. We've always grown, we took a hit, but that's in the past now," Niakhaté said. He added that qualification is built one match at a time, and that Senegal's immediate goal is to make the country proud.
Preparation has been brief, but the defender insisted the squad will be ready. "We only had our first real group training session yesterday. So everything is happening in a bit of a hurry. But we have no excuses and tomorrow we will be ready for this match," he said.
Niakhaté also welcomed the new coaching energy around the team, saying the staff brings "a breath of fresh air, a wealth of ideas, and a lot of energy." He added that the football language is already clear between the players and coaches, which should help Senegal settle into Vieira's ideas quickly.
Vieira finished with the same tone of responsibility. "We are aware of our responsibility. On the pitch, we will play with pride and determination to give the nation what it de" he said, signaling that the focus is not on labels, but on delivering the right response in Maputo.
