A 17-year-old Westbury High School student died after being shot near campus in southwest Houston on Friday morning. The Houston Police Department said the school was placed in secure mode while investigators worked the scene near Dryad Drive and Chimney Rock.
Police said the shooting happened about 8:20 a.m. and that the victim died from gunshot wounds. At a 10 a.m. update, investigators identified the student as 17 years old.

Noe Diaz said investigators believe some words were exchanged before someone produced a handgun. He described the killing as “a cowardly act” and said, “And from that, we believe some words were exchanged, and someone produced a handgun, and unfortunately the young man lost his life as a result of what I call a 'cowardly act,'”
Westbury High School secure mode
The Houston ISD response kept Westbury High School operating in secure mode while police investigated the nearby incident. That meant the school day continued under a restricted response while officers focused on the area near a complex and the wooded area where investigators said someone came out before shots were fired.
Dryad Drive and Chimney Rock
Police said some people were gathered when the person emerged from the wooded area and fired shots. No suspect was in custody at the time of the report, and the investigation continued as officers looked into who was involved and what led to the shooting near Westbury High School.
