Microsoft Xbox Free Play Weekend put four games in front of players from September 24 until September 27, splitting the lineup between two titles for Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members and two available to all Xbox members. That split made the weekend more than a sampler; it turned the same promotion into two different access paths.
Free Play Days lineup
The Escapists 2 and Young Suns were the membership-only part of the Free Play Days collection, available to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium and Essential members. PGA TOUR 2K25 and The Division 2 were free for all Xbox members over the same window, so a player without a membership could still sample half the slate.
Free Play Days works as a try-before-you-buy window, and this one gave players a clean four-day test across four named games. Players who wanted to install them could go through each game details page on XBOX.com and then land in the Microsoft Store, or use the Subscriptions tab on console and move into the Free Play Days collection on XBOX One and XBOX Series X|S.
PGA TOUR 2K25 and The Division 2
PGA TOUR 2K25 carried the weekend’s most specific in-game checklist through The Captain’s Call in Ranked Tours at Championship at Del Cerro. The quest asked players to hit 5 FIRs, record 5 birdies in a single round, and make 3 putts from 10+ feet, then paid out 250 VC, 3 Fittings, a LVL↑ Token, 600 MyPLAYER XP, and a Silver Leather Watch cosmetic.
The Division 2 added the clearest purchase incentive, with savings of up to 90% on the Standard Edition for a limited time. Set in Washington, D.C., it was the easiest title in the group to evaluate as a sale pitch: play it free through September 27, then decide whether the discount was enough to keep going.
Young Suns and The Escapists 2
Young Suns was the most platform-flexible of the four, available on console and PC, optimized for XBOX Series X|S, Smart Delivery, and XBOX Play Anywhere. Its setup — a multiplayer player narrative life sim set on Jupiter after a successful revolution against predatory corporations — made it the outlier in a lineup otherwise built around more familiar action and sports hooks.
Young Suns supported a crew of up to three friends or solo play, while The Escapists 2 leaned on a different kind of loop: escaping prisons with everyday items like soap and socks, or teaming up with friends and trying to follow prison rules. For a weekend promotion, that gave the collection range without adding clutter.
Membership split matters
The complication is simple enough to matter: the lineup was labeled free, but two of the four games still required an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium or Essential membership. That leaves the weekend open to all Xbox members on half the slate, while the other half works as a membership nudge wrapped inside the same promotion.
Players could keep the Gamerscore and achievements earned during the event, and they could buy the games and other editions at a limited-time discount if one of the four fit their schedule. By September 27, the trial window closed, and the practical question for Xbox was not whether the promotion worked as access, but which of these four games did the best job of turning a weekend sample into a purchase.
