Johnson County lowered flags at government buildings from Friday through Monday after the Iowa student death of Ahmed Osman and Hannah Jorgensen this week at Lake Macbride State Park. Osman was 10 and a fifth-grade student at Borlaug Elementary; Jorgensen was 24 and taught fifth grade there.
The county said, "The county extends its condolences to their families, friends, classmates, colleagues and all those affected by their deaths," as it marked the two deaths with a public memorial action. Both bodies were recovered from the Coralville Reservoir.
Johnson County Friday order
The flag order covered government buildings countywide and began immediately Friday, giving Johnson County a visible way to respond while the facts were still being assembled. The deaths were tied to a School of the Wild trip for Borlaug Elementary, and the Iowa City Community School District canceled future School of the Wild trips indefinitely.
That response came as the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said it was still investigating how each victim got into the water. On Friday, the office said it was continuing to conduct interviews and gather more information.

The county memorialized Osman and Jorgensen while the sheriff’s office kept working through the unanswered parts of the case. The office said it will release new information as soon as it is available, leaving the cause of each person’s entry into the water as the main question still open.
For now, the public action is fixed: flags lowered through Monday, two victims named, and a countywide response tied to a school trip that ended in loss.
