Vanessa Demopoulos said she has been training the entire time, and this Saturday she finally gets back into the UFC cage at UFC Vegas 121 after more than 15 months away. The return is a notable one not because of an injury comeback, but because Demopoulos said the long wait came down to not getting a fight offer.
Demopoulos made it clear that she never stopped working while she waited for her next booking. “I’ve been training. I’ve been mindlessly training the entire time,” she said, adding that it has been “way too long” since she was inside the octagon because she had been trying to fight the whole time.
A long wait, but not a lost year
Demopoulos said the layoff gave her time to keep building her game. She explained that she stayed focused on MMA, improved her boxing and made changes around her training environment. “I really tried to just like keep my eyes on the prize and stay focused on MMA. I grew a lot of my boxing skills throughout that time and just kind of like changed things up, mixed it up a little bit, found better people to be around,” she said.
That matters because a long absence can sometimes leave a fighter fighting rust as much as an opponent. Demopoulos is framing this stretch differently: as time spent sharpening her tools rather than stepping away from competition. She said the time away helped her feel happier and more settled, and that her heart is “so full and so happy right now.”
Support system back in place
Demopoulos also pointed to the people around her as part of the reason she feels ready to return. She said Jasmine Rocha will be helping her out, and described having friends from the jiu-jitsu community in her corner. She also said she is surrounded by “some of the best in the world at each of their fields,” while adding that she did not want to reveal too much.
The other key detail is the timing. UFC Vegas 121 begins this Saturday at 5pm EST and airs on Paramount+. For Demopoulos, that makes the fight not just another booking, but the end of a long stretch of waiting and training without a date on the calendar. Now the focus shifts to what she can show after more than 15 months away from the UFC.
