That approach fits the way Grambling State is entering the game. The bye week gave the Tigers time to recover from a hard-fought battle against TCU, a very good team, and Joseph said the break also allowed several players to get healthy. In a game like this, that can matter as much as any schematic wrinkle, because the first conference matchup often says as much about a team’s discipline as its talent.
Joseph’s message was simple: keep the playbook smaller and the execution cleaner. “Less is best,” he said, adding that he has gone into meeting rooms over the past two years and felt the instinct to simplify even further. That matters because Prairie View A&M is built to make offenses work for everything. Joseph said, “They’re going to stop you when it comes to SWAC play,” and noted that they “drop eight,” a reminder that Grambling State may have to stay patient and avoid forcing throws into tight spaces. In that kind of game, the offense is less about explosive intention than steady decision-making.
Joseph also singled out Prairie View A&M quarterback Kevin Carter, calling him “a good quarterback” and describing him as “a big, strong kid with a dynamic arm.” That kind of profile usually gives a defense more to worry about, because it can turn a conservative game into a sudden-shot game in one snap. For Grambling State, the challenge is not only limiting production, but also preventing the sort of easy rhythm that lets a quarterback settle in.
