Austin FC has kept itself in the Western Conference playoff conversation by avoiding defeat in seven consecutive MLS matches, and the next test arrives Saturday night at Q2 Stadium against San Diego FC.
Last Saturday, Austin FC played FC Dallas to a 0-0 draw in Frisco. Brad Stuver made four saves and picked up his fifth clean sheet of the season, and the result extended Austin FC's unbeaten run to seven consecutive games in league play.
Why San Diego Vs Austin matters
The timing of this matchup is important because Austin FC remains alive in a crowded Western Conference race. Only four points separate seven clubs from positions 8 to 14, which means every result can quickly change the picture near the bottom of the playoff line.
Besard Sabovic said the group knows the streak has kept the season moving in the right direction, but also stressed that Austin FC needs wins if it wants to reach the playoffs. That is the basic challenge now: staying steady is helpful, but at some point the club has to turn draws and narrow results into three points.
The task gets even tougher after San Diego FC. Austin FC is scheduled to face Nashville SC, LAFC and the Vancouver Whitecaps in three straight matches, giving the club a difficult run against teams with playoff ambitions of their own.
Roster and season context
Austin FC's season has also included an August move that sent Owen Wolff to Sporting Kansas City for cash. On the roster side, Major League Soccer recently updated General Allocation Money figures for all 30 clubs, and Austin FC said its total GAM will rise to $4,970,454 on Sept. 30. The club said that increase should give new sporting director Khaled El-Ahmad more flexibility as he begins building toward 2027 and beyond.
For now, though, the focus is on the standings and the immediate matchup in front of it. Seven games without a loss has kept Austin FC in the race. The next step is turning that stability into a win that makes the path to the playoffs a little clearer.
