Kazuchika Okada will defend the AEW International Championship against Tommaso Ciampa at All Out 2026, and this is not being sold as a polite sporting encounter. It is being sold, correctly, as a fight.
That matters, because Ciampa did not wander into this spot by accident. He spent weeks pushing for a place on the card, then on the September 16 episode of Dynamite in Norfolk, Virginia, he named Okada as the match he wanted most. Okada responded by insulting him on live television. Ciampa answered in the only way that made sense: he attacked Okada backstage the same night. Tony Khan signed the bout, and the grudge became official.
A feud built on irritation, not respect
Ciampa has made it plain that he does not want a clean little showcase. He wants the meanest version of this fight. That is exactly why this match works. The Psycho Killer is at his best when a bout stops feeling like a sporting contest and starts feeling like a personal dispute that needs settling in public. Against Okada, that is the right instinct.
It also gives AEW something it has been in danger of neglecting: a title match with a clear emotional spine. At All In London, Okada won the AEW International Championship. Now he is walking into All Out 2026 in Chicago with a challenger who did not politely request a shot and wait his turn. Ciampa kicked the door in.
That is a much better sell than the usual empty “who deserves it” debate. Ciampa has wanted this, Okada has dismissed him, and the result is simple: the champion now has a challenger who is angry enough to make the defense feel dangerous.
Chicago gets a proper night of pressure
All Out 2026 takes place on Saturday, September 26 at the NOW Arena in Chicago, and the location adds another layer of tension. WWE is running Worlds Collide the same night nearby in Rosemont, which means the Chicago area becomes a direct battleground for attention. That does not decide the match, obviously, but it does sharpen the context. AEW is not staging this in a vacuum.
For Ciampa, the timing is useful too. His last title shot ended in defeat against Darby Allin’s AEW World Championship in April, so this is not some random detour. It is another swing at a major prize, this time against a champion who has already made the whole thing personal. If he is going to turn that frustration into something meaningful, this is the spot.
And for Okada, the assignment is obvious. He is the champion. He is the name. He is the man who should be able to absorb a challenge like this without losing control. But that is the point of booking a match this way: if he underestimates Ciampa, the company has made the threat real. If he does not, then he gets a fight on his hands instead of a procession.
Either way, AEW has finally given this title defense the one thing it needed most: an edge.
