Ash Sutton will head to Silverstone with a chance to wrap up the British Touring Car Championship and move one step beyond the record of four titles he already shares in the series. The NAPA Racing UK driver leads the standings by 115 points going into the final two races, leaving him in position to secure a fifth crown at the penultimate round of the 2026 season.
For Sutton, the moment carries a personal weight as well as a championship one. He said it was "surreal" to be in this position, adding that it is "a great place to be for me and the team to be, heading to Silverstone with an opportunity to wrap this up."
The 32-year-old’s path to this point has been a long one. Sutton began karting in 2000, and he recalled that in 2006 he was "a little boy sitting on a sofa watching British Touring Cars, aspiring to be on the grid." He made his first British Touring Car Championship appearance in 2016, then won titles in 2017, 2020, 2021 and 2023.
What Sutton could achieve at Silverstone
Silverstone is the penultimate round of the season, and the British Touring Car Championship format means there are three races at each circuit across 10 race weekends. That structure gives Sutton a limited but meaningful chance to seal the championship before the finale, especially with such a strong lead over the field.
If he gets it done, Sutton would match the record of four titles and then move on to five, a milestone that would stand out in the modern history of the series. He described that possibility as "pretty surreal," saying, "It's not something that's kind of probably going to sink in straight away."
He also made clear that the significance of the achievement may not fully land until later. "It'd be one of those where actually you sit down over the winter period and really think then what you've actually gone and achieved, not just me, but by the whole team," he said.
That team focus matters at this stage of the season. Sutton is chasing not just another title, but a potentially historic one, with Silverstone offering the first chance to turn a commanding points lead into a championship-clinching result.
