Justin Gaethje’s latest reading of the UFC lightweight picture was blunt: Ilia Topuria may be dangerous, but he is not built to stay at 155. That matters because the title change at UFC White House did more than crown a new champion. It reopened the question of whether Topuria’s rise at lightweight was always going to run into a size problem.
Gaethje, 37, stopped Topuria to win the UFC lightweight title, and the post-fight message was just as sharp as the result. He said Topuria is undersized for lightweight and should move back to featherweight, where he had already won the UFC featherweight title and defended it once before jumping up. Gaethje also pointed directly to Arman Tsarukyan as the next man in line, which gives the division a clearer path forward even as the champion himself says he is still thinking about his future.
Why Gaethje doubts Topuria at 155
Gaethje’s argument was not that Topuria lacks talent. In fact, he made the opposite point in a way, acknowledging that Topuria can still win fights with skill, timing and a little luck. But his central view was that size will eventually matter at lightweight. He said Topuria should go back down to featherweight, where he believes he can beat Alexander Volkanovski and be champion again, rather than trying to force his way through a division full of bigger bodies and deeper threats.
That is a meaningful stance because Topuria had just knocked out Charles Oliveira to win the vacant lightweight title before losing it to Gaethje. He had also lobbied for an immediate rematch, which makes Gaethje’s comments sound less like a casual opinion and more like an early rejection of the rematch idea. Gaethje’s view is simple: Topuria may have elite power, but lightweight is another level of physical test.
Arman Tsarukyan is next
Gaethje also helped define the next title picture by naming Tsarukyan as the next challenger. He made clear that this was not a refusal to fight anyone, saying it is not that he does not want the matchup. Rather, he framed Tsarukyan as the logical next step because he is next in line.
That keeps the division moving, even if Gaethje himself is still undecided about how much more fighting he wants to do. He said he is not sure he will ever fight again, pointed to injuries he needs to take care of, and made it clear that preserving his health is now part of the calculation. He also said he does not feel like he has anything left to prove, even though he still wants revenge against the people who have beaten him. In that sense, the lightweight title picture has clarity around the next contender, but uncertainty around the champion’s own future.
What Gaethje said about Topuria may shape the debate for months. If he is right, then the UFC lightweight title has just been returned to a division built for bigger men. If he is wrong, Topuria will get another chance to prove that his ceiling at 155 is higher than Gaethje believes. Either way, the first message after the title change was unmistakable: Gaethje does not see Topuria as the division’s long-term answer, and Tsarukyan is the name he wants in the spotlight next.
