Apple iPhone 18 Pro review: the iPhone 18 Pro series trims the Dynamic Island and replaces the main camera setup with a 48-megapixel system that can switch between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0. Buyers get a modest hardware step, not a redesign, so the real question is whether those changes justify moving up from the iPhone 17 Pro generation.
Apple and the Dynamic Island
The smaller Dynamic Island is the most visible change in day-to-day use. It still handles Live Activities, but the iPhone 18 Pro series supports up to three ongoing Live Activities at once, compared with two on the iPhone 17 Pro.
That is a practical gain for people who keep several live updates on screen at once. It also means Apple is treating the front of the phone as a place to do a little more work, even while the rest of the design stays close to last year.
iPhone 18 Pro camera hardware
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max use the same camera hardware. The main camera now moves between f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0, while the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max used a fixed f/1.78 aperture.
In plain terms, that gives the new phones more control over how much light reaches the sensor and how much of a scene stays sharp. The 48-megapixel count does not change across the lineup, so the upgrade is about flexibility rather than a jump in pixel count.
Pro and Pro Max tradeoffs
The Pro and Pro Max keep the aluminum unibody design from the iPhone 17 Pro series, along with Ceramic Shield 2 on the front, Ceramic Shield on the back and IP68 water resistance. The iPhone 18 Pro measures 5.91 x 2.83 x 0.34 inches and weighs 7.44 ounces, while the iPhone 17 Pro weighs 7.27 ounces; the iPhone 18 Pro Max measures 6.43 x 3.07 x 0.34 inches and weighs 8.78 ounces, compared with 8.22 ounces for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
Those numbers make the tradeoff easy to see. The bigger model is heavier, and Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max gets a bigger battery life boost than the iPhone 18 Pro, but the review does not put a number on that gain.
Apple’s own review calls the phones the standard setter, yet the rest of the package reads as incremental. Buyers who want the camera hardware do not need the larger phone for it, and the open question is price.
