Week 3 NFL Rankings: Geno Smith, C.J. Stroud and Tony Pollard headline fantasy sleepers — Nfl Rankings

Week 3 fantasy decisions are already getting tricky, and injuries have made the available player pool thinner than usual. That is why matchup-based picks can matter so much this early in the season. Based on Next Gen Stats, Geno Smith, C.J. Stroud and Tony Pollard all landed in favorable spots for managers looking for help.

Geno Smith gets a strong matchup against the Lions

Geno Smith was highlighted this week as a fantasy sleeper against the Lions, and the numbers help explain why. Through two weeks, the Lions had given up 55 completions, 658 passing yards and six passing touchdowns. Those are the kinds of early-season passing totals that can put a quarterback on the fantasy radar quickly.

The matchup also comes with volume clues that point to a workable passing environment. Next Gen Stats showed the Lions allowing 64.02 fantasy points, along with 706 passing yards allowed and 10 explosive passes allowed. They also had allowed 9.8 yards per attempt, which is a useful marker for upside if a quarterback can get into a rhythm.

C.J. Stroud and Tony Pollard also fit the Week 3 picture

C.J. Stroud was another Week 3 highlight, this time in a matchup against the Colts. The context matters because Stroud led the NFL through two weeks with 104 dropbacks and 93 pass attempts. That kind of workload gives him a steady fantasy floor, especially when the matchup supports more passing production.

Tony Pollard was also mentioned for Week 3 against the Giants. The matchup data again leans in his favor, with the Giants allowing 68.4 fantasy points and 1,029 total yards. On the ground, they had given up a 66.7% rush yards over expected rate, 4.7 yards per carry, 1.1 yards over expected per carry and 1.7 rush yards over expected per carry, while 57.9% of rushes were going over expected.

That makes Pollard the kind of running back who can benefit from both efficiency and volume. In a week where fantasy managers may be forced to look deeper than usual, those are exactly the types of matchups worth targeting. The overall lesson from this week’s NFL rankings is simple: the best short-term plays are the ones backed by both opportunity and opponent weakness.
