The Denver Broncos made a small roster move on Saturday that could matter more than it looks on the surface: rookie wide receiver and returner Kolbe Katsis was elevated to the Week 3 game-day roster ahead of Sunday Night Football against the Los Angeles Rams. In a season where availability has already started to shape decisions, the move gives Denver another option in the return game and another layer of insurance for a short-handed Week 3 setup.
The timing tells the story. Marvin Mims Jr. was questionable for Sunday night with the same foot injury that kept him out of Week 2, so the Broncos needed help at returner. Katsis now enters the mix at a moment when the special-teams responsibilities matter as much as any offensive package, especially with Week 3 still early enough for depth decisions to have a real impact on how the game is managed.
Why the Broncos needed the move
This was not a surprise roster shuffle for the sake of it. The Broncos were already dealing with the ripple effects of Week 2, when Jonah Coleman suffered an ankle sprain in the win over the Jacksonville Jaguars and J.K. Dobbins left with a hip injury and did not return in the second half. On Saturday, Denver placed Coleman on injured reserve, promoted Mitchell Fraboni to the active roster and elevated Adam Prentice and Katsis to the game-day roster.
For Katsis, this is the third elevation of the season, which suggests the Broncos have been willing to keep him close when they need a flexible option. The same is true of Fraboni, who had spent the first two weeks on the practice squad and was elevated in each of the Broncos' two games so far. Prentice's elevation was his third of the season, another sign that Denver is leaning on familiarity and depth management while the roster absorbs early-season injuries.
The bigger point is that Katsis was not added as a luxury. He was added because the Broncos needed a returner available for a game in which Mims' status was uncertain. That makes the move functional rather than flashy, but those are often the roster calls that reveal how teams are trying to protect themselves before kickoff. If Mims is able to play, Katsis still gives Denver another usable piece. If not, the Broncos at least have covered the most immediate hole without waiting until Sunday night to react.
That is the logic of early-season roster management: keep the roles covered, avoid scrambling late, and make sure one injury does not become two problems. For the Broncos, Kolbe Katsis now sits right at that intersection.
