The Toronto Maple Leafs are reportedly in deep trade talks for Columbus Blue Jackets right wing Kirill Marchenko, a development that adds another layer to a growing offseason storyline for a team trying to stay in contention while reworking its offense. Elliotte Friedman reported Monday that Toronto has pushed hard enough that the interest is no longer quiet, even if the full picture of a potential deal is still unclear.
Marchenko is coming off back-to-back strong seasons and is now viewed as the kind of player playoff contenders tend to target. He produced 74 points in 2024-25, including 43 assists and 31 goals, after posting 67 points with 40 assists and 27 goals the season before. At 26 years old, he fits the profile of a winger who can help a team right away while still offering upside beyond a short-term rental.
Why Columbus might listen
The Blue Jackets and Marchenko have not been able to finalize a contract extension, and that uncertainty is now part of the conversation. Earlier this offseason, Marchenko was noncommittal about his status with Columbus, and after the upcoming season he is scheduled for restricted free agency. That puts the Blue Jackets in a familiar position: either keep working toward a long-term agreement or weigh the possibility of moving a valuable scorer before the situation gets more complicated.
LeBrun of The Athletic added Monday that the extension situation remains unresolved, which helps explain why other teams have continued to circle. Friedman said Montreal, the Islanders, Toronto and Winnipeg had all shown interest at different points, while he also heard Boston had made an offer. He also mentioned Vegas and Seattle as clubs that may be involved in the mix.
What it means for Toronto
The Maple Leafs missed the postseason last year after a nine-season playoff streak ended, and their offense finished 16th in the league in goals per game. That context matters here. If Toronto is serious about Marchenko, it would be looking at a 26-year-old winger who has already shown he can drive offense at a high level and could help stabilize a group that needs more production. The reported interest also suggests Toronto is trying to improve without making its pursuit too obvious.
For now, the key question is whether the Maple Leafs can turn deep talks into a real deal. Matthew Knies gives Toronto one important young forward piece already in place, but Marchenko would be a different type of addition: a proven scorer entering what should be his prime.
