Tripoli hosted the Libya-Korea Economic Cooperation Forum today, bringing together Suhail Abu Shiha, Mohamed Raied, Ashraf Al-Thulthi and the Korean Chargé d'affaires to Libya. Businesspeople, company representatives and authorized agents for Korean brands in Libya also took part.
The forum focused on economic and trade cooperation between Libya and Korea, with participants also discussing investment, partnership opportunities, and the exchange of expertise and commercial and technical information. Mohamed Raied said the Libyan-Korean partnership opens broad horizons for economic cooperation across various sectors, and that cooperation with Korean companies and institutions could extend beyond mere trade to establish genuine partnerships.
Husni Bey cites Korea
Husni Bey said the Korean experience offers a significant model from which Libya could benefit. He pointed to Korea's transformation over the past seven decades from a nation ravaged by war and poverty into an advanced industrial, technological, and export-oriented economy.
The forum also showcased the latest industrial and technological developments with the participation of LG, while Ashraf Al-Thulthi said the Korean side intends to propose a cooperation initiative for crude oil refining within Libya. He said the initiative aims to help supply the local market with fuel products such as gasoline and diesel, and added that Korean companies such as Hyundai have been involved in power generation projects in Libya.
Libya-Korea Chamber talks
That mix of trade, energy and technology widened the discussion beyond a single sector, but the practical stage remains proposal-making and exploration rather than signed projects. Ashraf Al-Thulthi also said the Korean side is exploring the possibility of securing a share of Libyan crude oil for export to Korea, leaving the forum centered on ideas that still need a formal decision before any implementation can start.
