The Chicago Bears got the cleanest possible update on one of the least glamorous positions on the field: Cairo Santos returned to full practice by Saturday. That matters more than it sounds, because when your placekicker is on the injury report and you do not have a backup placekicker sitting in the system, the margin for error disappears fast.
Santos had been listed with a right hip issue after saying he was only sore from kicking water-logged footballs against the Vikings in Week 2. By Friday he was back on the field, and by Saturday he was a full participant. That is the sort of late-week recovery Bears fans needed to see before Monday night’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Bears could not afford another special-teams headache
This is not the kind of injury update that gets the headline treatment in a normal week. But this was not a normal week. The Bears were already sorting out other moving parts, with Tyson Bagent clearing concussion protocol on Monday while Case Keenum took first-team practice reps all week. Add in a kicker issue, and suddenly the whole operation starts to look far more fragile than it should.
That is why Santos’ return to full practice by Saturday was the key development here. If he had been limited again, the Bears would have been staring at a problem they could not easily solve. Instead, they got the one thing special teams coaches always want: a clear, boring, available kicker.
Plenty of positives, but the bigger picture still matters
There were other encouraging signs too. Kyle Monangai resumed full participation on Friday and Saturday, Tyrique Stevenson was listed as a full participant on Saturday, and Joe Thuney and Grady Jarrett were also full participants. Ben Johnson had already said Stevenson had been able to participate more extensively than previously thought.
Still, Santos was the most important practical update because of what his absence would have meant. Kickers are easy to ignore until suddenly they are not, and the Bears were never in a position to shrug this one off. Dennis Allen knows that better than most: when the margins are tight, special teams can swing the entire night.
So the answer to the obvious question is yes, Cairo Santos returned to full practice before Monday night. And no, the Bears did not have the luxury of a backup placekicker to lean on if things had gone wrong. That is why this update mattered.
