Emergency services were called to Rotherham's Clifton Mount on Tuesday afternoon after reports of an explosion, and South Yorkshire Police said a man was sadly found deceased. Clifton Mount was closed off while crews worked at the scene, then reopened after it was made safe.
South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said crews were called at 13:18 BST to reports of an explosion on Clifton Mount in Rotherham. It said three fire engines from Rotherham and Tankersley fire stations attended and made the scene safe alongside partner agencies.
Craig Cockram, who lives in the block, said he heard a bang “as if there was a shooting” and that police knocked on his door about 30 minutes later. He said officers told him they were evacuating people from the three-storey block, leaving residents to wait while the emergency response unfolded.

South Yorkshire Police said initial enquiries indicate that there is no risk to the wider community. Cadent Gas said the incident was “not an issue related to our gas network,” while the cause of the explosion remains under investigation.
