The Phillies kept their season alive Wednesday night with a 4-3 win over the Braves in Game 2, thanks to Alec Bohm’s solo homer in the 10th inning off Didier Fuentes. The result sent the series back to Atlanta for an elimination Game 3 on Thursday and made the wild-card round even tighter, with three teams already headed home by Wednesday.
It was a game built on swings in momentum. Tyler Mahle gave the Phillies seven innings of one-run ball at Truist Park, continuing a stretch that included a 1.99 ERA over nine second-half starts. The Braves answered in the seventh when Bryce Harper misplayed a fly ball from Drake Baldwin, but the Phillies responded in the eighth with back-to-back home runs from Kyle Schwarber and Harper.
How the game turned
That late surge set up the final twist. Bohm, who said he really did not want the year to end, delivered the deciding shot in the 10th and pushed the Phillies one step farther into October. Harper also summed up the mindset well after the game, noting that it does not matter what happened in the previous at-bat or even the previous inning.
The Phillies’ win was part of a busy postseason Wednesday. Chase Meidroth hit a three-run homer in the sixth inning as the White Sox beat the Astros 7-3, and the White Sox and Yankees were among the teams that advanced from the wild-card round. For the Phillies, though, the focus was simpler: survive, extend the series, and force one more game in Atlanta.
