The FTC expanded Amazon FTC settlement payouts on October 1, opening a new round of automatic refunds for some Amazon Prime subscribers. Qualifying consumers can now receive up to $200 without filing a claim.
The settlement is worth $2.5 billion. Amazon agreed to pay a $1 billion civil fine and set aside $1.5 billion for consumer restitution, and more than $845 million had already been distributed as of September.
Amazon Prime eligibility window
The October 1 expansion covers U.S.-based subscribers enrolled through disputed checkout screens or people who unsuccessfully tried to cancel a Prime membership between June 23 2019 and June 23 2025. It also adds consumers who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits during any 12-month period after enrollment.
A federal court order raised the maximum individual payout cap from $51 to $200. Supplemental payments of up to $149 will automatically go to qualifying recipients who already received the lower amount, bringing them to the new ceiling without any action on their part.
PayPal, Venmo, and checks
Payments can be sent through PayPal, Venmo, or a mailed paper check. Electronic transfers and checks must be redeemed or cashed within 60 days of issuance, and any unclaimed money returns to the settlement pool.
The settlement administrator will not contact consumers by text, email, or phone to demand payment, banking credentials, or processing fees. That leaves the practical step simple for eligible people: wait for the automatic payment method they were assigned and watch the deadline on any transfer or check.
Amazon and The FTC
The original refund wave reached consumers with only a small number of Prime benefits, while the October 1 phase broadens who can be paid. The added tier means some people who already received the $51 cap may now see another payment arrive automatically.
How many total consumers qualify under the expanded guidelines is not stated. For anyone covered by the settlement, the key change today is the higher cap and the automatic top-up, not a new filing process.
