Rob Beckett is heading into The Celebrity Traitors with Romesh Ranganathan, and the timing is blunt: the second season starts this evening. Their pairing turns a cast announcement into a built-in storyline, because the two comedians have spent years working together across TV.
Beckett said he and Ranganathan met in the early 2010s on the comedy circuit, then later built a run of shared projects that includes Rob and Romesh VS, A League of Their Own, Taskmaster and 8 Out of 10 Cats. He also said he and Ranganathan, Joe Lycett and James Acaster were once doing gigs in pubs in Soho in front of eight people, which makes the scale of this new assignment hard to miss.
Rob and Romesh VS
Rob and Romesh VS began in 2017 from a one-off special episode with Anthony Joshua, and the series has since reached eight seasons. Its ninth season returns on 14 October, giving Beckett and Ranganathan another proof point that their partnership is not a one-off television experiment but a repeatable format with staying power.
That history also extends beyond their own series. Beckett and Ranganathan presented the TV BAFTAs for two years running in 2023 and 2024, adding another layer of shared screen time before The Celebrity Traitors put them in a competition where cooperation is no longer the default.
May 2026 announcement
In May 2026, Beckett and Ranganathan were announced for the new series of The Celebrity Traitors. Beckett called it “a reflective moment to consider this journey we’ve all gone on to now be on the biggest show on TV,” tying the casting to the long road from small comedy rooms to a mainstream competition with much wider reach.
Ranganathan has made the sharper point: he said it will be weird doing the show with Beckett because they have worked together for a decade now, but he still will not be able to trust him. He added that Beckett is “just as easily going to be on my side as he is going to twist the knife in my back given the opportunity,” which is the kind of conflict the format needs if it is going to feel alive rather than polite.
Soho in early years
Beckett’s own recollection gives the pair’s history some useful scale. He said, “Romesh, obviously everyone knows we’re such good friends, but Joe Lycett and James Acaster, I did gigs with them nearly 20 years ago, in pubs in Soho in front of eight people, and now all of a sudden we're in this situation,” before adding, “So, it's quite a reflective moment to consider this journey we’ve all gone on to now be on the biggest show on TV.”
For viewers, the immediate takeaway is simple: this is not just another celebrity cast list. The show begins tonight, and the friction worth watching is whether Beckett and Ranganathan fall back into the mutual cover that has defined Rob and Romesh VS, or whether the format pushes them into the kind of suspicion Ranganathan has already put on record.
