North Wales Police said the crash involved a white Ford Transit Tipper and the child in Conwy county. The force said a 39-year-old man was arrested and later released under investigation, while specially trained family liaison officers are supporting the boy's family.

On Thursday evening, roads around Pen-Y-Bryn Road and Bryn Road were closed and people were asked to avoid the area. Flowers and soft toys were left near the scene as the investigation continued.

Det Insp Tim Evans said: "Our thoughts are with the young boy's family and friends at this extremely difficult time." He added: "We recognise the profound impact that a tragedy such as this has on a family and the wider community."

He also asked for help from anyone with material that could show the crash or the moments around it. "We're urging anybody who may have private CCTV footage a front door camera or dashcam footage to please get in touch," he said. "These may have captured something that you did not think was significant at the time."

Police also want anyone who witnessed the incident or was in the area around Pen y Bryn Road and Mill Road at the time to come forward. "Please do not assume that someone else has come forward – even the smallest piece of information could help our investigation establish what happened," Tim Evans said.

The arrest leaves one part of the case unresolved in public: North Wales Police have not said what role the 39-year-old man is alleged to have had in the crash. The investigation into the circumstances is ongoing, and the practical next step for anyone with relevant information is to contact police with any footage or first-hand account from the area around Mill Road in Llanfairfechan.
