Michael Goessling learns Michael Mcdonald Son is 59-year-old Missouri man

Michael Goessling, 59, learned in 2025 that he is Michael McDonald son after hearing a voice he recognized but could not place and then asking the question out loud. The discovery came after nearly 58 years of separation and turned a closed adoption into a late-life family reunion.

In May and a voice memo

In May, Goessling received a letter from his biological parents asking to make contact, and he spoke with his biological mother that night. He suggested lunch on his birthday, then met her 58 years to the day later. That same night, he got a voice memo from his biological father, and the following day Goessling and Michael McDonald spoke on the phone for the first time.

Goessling said he knew only his father’s first name before the call. When he asked what McDonald did for a living, the reply was simple: he was a musician. Goessling said, "I said to Mike, ‘So hey, tell me, what do you do?’ And he said, ‘Well, I’m a musician.’ And I said, ‘That is awesome. I love music. I’ve always been a music nut,’" before learning that the voice belonged to the five-time Grammy winner and lead vocalist of the Doobie Brothers.

23andMe and a closed adoption

Goessling said his biological parents tracked him down after one of his half-brothers found him through a 23andMe DNA test. That mechanism matters here because the family was separated through a closed adoption, with the baby placed with Goessling’s parents, who lived roughly 20 minutes away in a suburb of St. Louis.

Michael McDonald had a child in Missouri with his middle school sweetheart and neighbor when they were 14 years old. Goessling’s parents raised him after the adoption, and the gap between the original placement and the reunion stretched nearly 58 years before contact finally happened.

Doobie Brothers and St. Louis

Goessling said he had listened to the Doobie Brothers since he was a little boy, and he remembered McDonald replacing Tom Johnston as lead singer and guitarist in 1975, when he was 8 or 9 years old. That memory made the first call more complicated: he had heard the voice before, but he did not realize until later that the musician on the line was his biological father.

McDonald told Goessling that he had a show in St. Louis on Sept. 4, 2025, later identified by Goessling as a Doobie Brothers performance at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheater. Goessling said, "I was surprised by that statement, having done the math and knowing how old he was," and added, "There are still days I wake up, and my first thought is I am coming out of the craziest dream, and it’s been a year and a half."

The unanswered question now is the one underneath the whole story: how Michael McDonald and Goessling’s mother decided on a closed adoption when they were both 14 years old. That missing piece is the last one that still belongs to the beginning.
