James Hagens is opening his first NHL September on the Bruins’ Kid Line. He will skate left wing beside Fraser Minten and Marat Khusnutdinov when the Bruins face the Rangers at 8:07 p.m. at TD Garden.

That is the cleanest sign yet that the Bruins want the rookie in a defined role, not parked on the edge of the lineup. A year ago, Hagens was a Boston College sophomore; now he is being asked to help set the tone for a season opener at TD Garden.

Kid Line, not a placeholder

Fraser Minten is set at center and Marat Khusnutdinov on the right side, which gives Hagens a simple assignment: play fast, support the puck, and make himself useful without forcing the issue. The Bruins have also shifted Morgan Geekie to bumper duty on the power play, another sign that the club is spreading jobs across the forward group instead of waiting for one player to solve everything.

James Hagens' first full Bruins season begins Sept. 16 is the kind of detail that matters because the role is already defined before the first puck drop. For a rookie winger, that usually means the staff values pace and structure over a long leash in the middle of the ice.

Sweeney on the middle

Don Sweeney tried to flatten the old center debate at Monday’s news conference on Causeway Street. “I’m not as caught up in the 1C, 2C version of things,” he said, before adding, “I think our depth overall in the middle of the ice is improving … I think we’re good on the depth part of it now.”

The Bruins are still entering a fourth consecutive season absent a franchise center, with Elias Lindholm and Pavel Zacha at the top of the pecking order. That leaves the club leaning on a committee approach, even after the June arrival of JJ Peterka and the Sunday naming of David Pastrnak as the new captain.

Tuesday at TD Garden

Tuesday night against the Rangers is the first test of that structure. If Hagens holds the left side on the Kid Line, the Bruins can keep their scoring depth intact while they sort through the bigger question in the middle of the ice.

The sharper read is simple: Hagens is not being asked to carry the whole answer yet, but he is being placed close enough to the center conversation that a strong start could move him up the board quickly.
