Gloucester winger Phil Cokanasiga has been ruled out until January after foot surgery, a setback that leaves the Cherry and Whites without one of their summer signings for several months.
The 25-year-old joined Gloucester from Ospreys this summer and made an immediate impression earlier this month, scoring two tries on his debut in the Prem Rugby Cup defeat by Bristol. But his progress was interrupted in the win against Exeter, where Gloucester head coach George Skivington said Cokanasiga had "caught his foot". The injury was serious enough to require surgery, and the club have now confirmed he will not return until January.
For Gloucester, the timing is awkward. Cokanasiga was brought in to add pace and finishing ability on the wing, and his absence removes a fresh attacking option at a stage of the season when squad depth can quickly be tested. It also means Gloucester will have to manage without the momentum he had built from those first two tries in club colours.
Another setback for Gloucester
Cokanasiga is not the only player Gloucester have had to rule out until January. Jamal Ford Robinson is also sidelined after having an operation on a torn hamstring, with Gloucester saying he has had multiple knee operations over the past 12 months.
That leaves the club dealing with more than one injury issue in the same part of the season, and it adds another layer of difficulty to selection planning heading into the winter months. For Gloucester, the immediate focus will be covering the wing positions and making sure the squad can absorb another long absence.
Against that backdrop, the Gloucester Vs Harlequins fixture now arrives with one less option available to Skivington. The game itself will be a test of depth, but the broader picture is that Gloucester have already had to adjust to losing a player who had started strongly and looked ready to play a bigger role.
