Louisville’s season has become a study in contradiction. The Cardinals have spent plenty of time trying to upgrade the pass rush and the offensive line, but the biggest issue in this matchup may still be what happens behind the rush: coverage. That is what makes Louisville Vs Nc State interesting. The Cards have already allowed four passing plays of 60 or more yards this season, and that kind of breakdown opens the door for any opponent that can stay patient long enough to find it.
NC State, though, comes into the game with a different kind of problem. The Wolfpack have produced only one passing play of 30 or more yards against FBS competition this year, which means the matchup is not simply about whether Louisville can protect the back end. It is also about whether NC State can finally create something explosive through the air. In other words, both sides are carrying a weakness that the other team should be thinking about all week.
Louisville’s coverage issues are the real concern
The Cardinals’ offseason portal work was aimed at improving both the pass rush and the offensive line, but the results have not yet solved the most obvious defensive problem. Louisville has only five sacks from its edge players so far, and that limited pressure has made it harder to hide issues in coverage. If the quarterback has time, the window for a bust grows wider, and Louisville has already been punished for that more than once.
That is especially relevant because the Cardinals have now allowed four passing plays of 60 or more yards. Those are not routine gains. They are the kind of plays that usually point to a breakdown in spacing, leverage or communication, and they are exactly the sort of mistake NC State will be trying to force.
NC State needs more than patience
The Wolfpack’s passing game has been an issue since the season opener against Virginia, and the numbers have not changed much since then. Against FBS competition, NC State has only one passing play of 30 or more yards. That is a low number for a team trying to threaten a defense that has already shown vulnerability over the top.
CJ Bailey has struggled all night to find open targets in the passing game, which has limited how dangerous NC State can be when it tries to stretch the field. If that continues, Louisville’s biggest weakness might not be tested often enough to matter. But if the Wolfpack can finally get a clean shot downfield, this matchup suddenly becomes a very different conversation.
Two struggling units, one useful opening
Last weekend’s loss to Wake Forest also left Louisville with another concern: the offensive line played poorly, so the Cardinals are not entering this game with momentum on either side of the ball. The last two games have featured Anwar O’Neal starting for Louisville, which adds another layer to a unit still trying to settle in.
The point is not that NC State has suddenly become a vertical passing machine. It has not. The point is that Louisville’s back-end coverage problems create a real opening, and the Wolfpack are one of the few opponents whose passing game has been limited enough to make that opening feel winnable. That is what makes Louisville Vs Nc State compelling: each team has a weakness that lines up neatly with the other team’s question.
If Louisville’s edge rush cannot create more than the five sacks it has so far, and if NC State cannot turn its passing game into something more explosive than the one 30-yard play it has produced against FBS opponents, this may come down to which side can survive its own flaws first. That is not a glamorous matchup. It is, however, a revealing one.
