Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 9 targets 3.9 mm unfolded design

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 9 is being developed with an early concept design that targets 3.9 mm when unfolded and 7.9 mm when folded. For buyers tracking Samsung’s foldable hardware, that points to a much slimmer device than the Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Binay Konwar published the report on October 2, 2026, and credited @kro_roe for saying Samsung had already started developing the phone. The numbers are the part that matters most here because the Galaxy Z Fold 8 measures 4.5 mm unfolded and 9.7 mm folded.

The same report says Samsung may be considering an under-display camera for the inner screen. That would replace the visible hole-punch camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 inner display and would clean up the panel, but the report also leaves open whether Samsung has actually locked that choice in.

@kro_roe said, “UDC may already be confirmed,” but the report itself still treats the camera change as a possibility rather than a finished spec. For readers, that means the design target is more concrete than the camera decision, which still sits in the rumor stage.

Galaxy Z Fold 8 comparison

The earlier Galaxy Z Fold 8 figures make the scale of the rumored redesign easier to read. Dropping from 4.5 mm to 3.9 mm unfolded is a small number on paper, but it is a meaningful engineering squeeze in a device that has to house a folding display, a hinge, and battery hardware.

An earlier rumor also pointed to 60W wired charging for the Galaxy Z Fold 9 series, compared with 45W on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series. The same source hoped Samsung would bring IP68 protection and restore S Pen support, which would make the next foldable easier to carry and more useful for stylus users if those features survive into the final product.

The unresolved question is whether Samsung has actually finalized the 3.9 mm and 7.9 mm targets, or the under-display camera, before the phone moves from concept toward a real launch build.
