Ken Griffin’s representatives closed a $1.1 billion purchase of about 30 acres in Wynwood on Sept. 29, clearing the way for a new Carnegie Mellon campus. The sale gives Carnegie Mellon University Miami a site in one of Miami’s fastest-changing districts.
Moises Mana said the offer arrived without warning. “To be honest, they came and knocked on my door, I didn't solicit it. It was not for sale.”
Moishe Mana and Wynwood
Moishe Mana, founder and chairman of Mana Common, said the deal took nearly three years from the first contact to closing. He also said the contract was signed 18 months before the sale closed, and that he had spent two to three days digesting the offer before telling his people to call them back.
“I had the vision. I completed it… And then these guys walk to my office, and they tell me they want to buy it — my property, Mana Wynwood. I looked at them, I said, ‘It's not for sale.’”
Mana began investing in Wynwood in 2009 during the Great Recession, when he bought a distressed warehouse for approximately $5 million. He later spent less than $70 million assembling the Wynwood portfolio that now includes the land sold to Griffin.
Carnegie Mellon University Miami
Carnegie Mellon University said the $3 billion gift will be split into $2 billion for Carnegie Mellon University Miami and $1 billion for the Pittsburgh campus. The university described the gift as the largest individual donation in the history of higher education, and the land purchase is part of Griffin’s broader commitment to the school.
The money is being divided by campus purpose: one portion supports launch costs for the Miami campus, while the other supports the Pittsburgh campus. That structure means the land deal is not a standalone real-estate play; it is the physical base for the Miami campus tied to the broader gift.
Florida history
The sale marked the largest land assemblage transaction in Florida history. Mana described the land as irreplaceable, saying, “Where do you find 30 acres in the coolest neighborhood in America, if not the world? It's priceless, there's no price to it,”
For readers tracking the project, the immediate fact is that the site has changed hands and the campus plan has a home in Wynwood. What has not been laid out is the specific academic program mix for Carnegie Mellon University Miami, so the next practical step is watching how the university defines the campus once the land deal is fully absorbed into its expansion plan.
