Chiefs Vs Raiders: Kansas City Sees a Big Week 4 Test in a Top-of-Division Battle

Before the Week 4 Chiefs Vs Raiders matchup, Kansas City’s message was clear: this is more than a regular-season game, even if the schedule is still young. Both teams entered at 3-0, and that alone gave the meeting a different weight. The AFC West was already being shaped by a matchup that could decide who sits atop the division, and the Chiefs talked about it that way.

Andy Reid framed the game as the kind of rivalry that gets better when both teams are strong. He pointed to the atmosphere, the improvement in the Raiders and the broader value of a game like this for fans and for the division race. Chris Jones took the same view from a more practical angle, stressing that these are the games that count as two because they carry extra importance inside the AFC West and bring the kind of physical edge that can define a season.

The Raiders' defense drew the strongest attention

Much of Kansas City’s focus centered on what the Raiders have done defensively through their three-game success. Patrick Mahomes said the challenge starts with Maxx Crosby and the defensive line, then extends to the need to protect, run the ball and match the Raiders’ intensity. He also singled out the turnover production, noting how valuable that is in the league and how important it would be for the Chiefs to meet that level of urgency.

Eric Bieniemy offered a similar assessment, saying the Raiders are doing a strong job on defense because they are playing fast, playing hard and producing a high number of turnovers. He also mentioned the fumbles and batted balls that have helped drive that success, while emphasizing the energy and fun that seems to be fueling the unit. In other words, Kansas City is not treating this as a fluky hot streak. It is treating it as a real defensive problem that has to be solved.

That is why Crosby became such a central part of the conversation. Reid called him relentless, tough and one of the best players in the business, while Bieniemy credited him with leading the group through its three-game success. Mahomes, too, described him as one of the best competitors in the league, saying the matchup brings out the best in both sides because of the mutual respect involved. The tone from the Chiefs was not hype. It was caution.

That caution also extended to the other side of the ball, where Steve Spagnuolo focused on Kirk. Spagnuolo said he has tremendous respect for him, but the football challenge is obvious: Kirk gets the ball out quickly, which makes him difficult to disrupt. Spagnuolo said pass knockdowns, sticky coverage and tighter windows would all matter, along with mixing looks carefully and forcing longer down-and-distance situations.

The larger picture is simple. This is a Week 4 contest between two undefeated teams, but the early record is only part of the story. The Chiefs are looking at a Raiders team that has built its start on defense, disruption and tempo. That makes the matchup feel less like a standard early-season game and more like an early test of who can control the division’s direction. Kansas City knows what is at stake, and the comments from Reid, Mahomes, Jones, Bieniemy and Spagnuolo show that the Raiders have earned that respect.
