New York Giants gamble on J.J. McCarthy as Is Jj Mccarthy Starting becomes the big question

The New York Giants have made a low-cost swing on J.J. McCarthy, but the move does not mean he is about to take over as the starter. For now, the answer to Is Jj Mccarthy Starting is no: Jameis Winston is expected to start this Sunday against the 1-2 Arizona Cardinals.

The Giants acquired McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings earlier this week for a 2027 fifth-round draft choice, a deal that immediately raised questions about what they see in the former 2024 first-round draft pick. McCarthy arrives in New York as a project quarterback, and the trade only adds to the sense that the Giants are looking at the position with an eye on both now and later.

Why the trade has sparked so many questions

One NFL scout said there is no doubt McCarthy has talent and suggested he could fit what the Giants want to do. But the bigger point, according to that view, is the price. If the Vikings were willing to move on from a player they once viewed so highly, it naturally makes people wonder what they saw behind the scenes.

That concern is part of why the trade has been read by outsiders as more than just a depth move. Some around the game think it could also reflect uncertainty about whether Winston can replace the injured Jaxson Dart for the rest of the season. Even so, the immediate plan has not changed.

Winston gets the Week 1-style opportunity

This coming Sunday, Winston will start for the 2-1 Giants against the Cardinals. That means McCarthy will not be thrown straight into the job, which is sensible given his background and where he is in his development.

During his rookie season, McCarthy recovered from a full meniscus repair, and last summer Kevin O’Connell named Kyler Murray the Week 1 starter before later moving McCarthy to QB3 behind Carson Wentz. Those decisions matter because they show the Vikings never treated him like an immediate answer.

What the Vikings’ view says about McCarthy

One assistant coach did not hide how striking that sequence was. He pointed out that McCarthy could not beat out Murray or Wentz, adding that it does not usually happen to a high first-round pick. In his view, that tells you everything about what Minnesota thought of him, even if a change of scenery might help.

That same source also noted that O’Connell is generally strong with quarterbacks, which makes the Vikings’ decision even harder to ignore. If McCarthy did not get much out of that environment, the question becomes whether a new staff can unlock him now.

A fresh start, but not a quick fix

There is optimism in New York, too. A talent evaluator said a fresh start with people that chose him is a good thing, and pointed to the Harbaugh connection through Jim Harbaugh at the University of Michigan. He also mentioned Matt Nagy as someone who should know what he is doing.

That evaluator compared the situation to quarterbacks such as Mac Jones, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield going somewhere new, backing up, and hoping to become a starter later on. That is probably the right lens here. McCarthy is worth watching, but Giants fans should be realistic about what this move means right now.

For the moment, the answer to Is Jj Mccarthy Starting is simple: not yet. The Giants have bought themselves a quarterback with upside, but Winston remains the man for Sunday, and McCarthy’s next step will come after that.
