Chris Mundy has assembled a five-writer Lanterns season 2 room even though HBO has not officially renewed the series. The move puts development in motion while Lanterns season 1 is still heading toward its finale on Sunday, October 4.
Chris Mundy’s five-writer room
The room includes Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, Selwyn Seyfu Hinds, and Vanessa Baden Kelly, with Mundy steering the work as showrunner. That is a real staffing step, not a vague promise: the group exists now, and it is already shaping possible Season 2 stories before HBO has made the next-season call.
Damon Lindelof said at the August Lanterns premiere that “Mundy had already started a new room to figure out what Season 2 stories could look like.” That line matters because it shows the discussion had moved past speculation and into actual page work, even if the room’s output is still at the pitch-page stage.
Vanessa Baden Kelly’s return
Vanessa Baden Kelly gives the room a direct Season 1 link. She is the co-executive producer and writer who wrote Trust Fall and OutKast for Lanterns season 1, and HBO reported OutKast as the most viewed episode with 10 million viewers.
Kelly’s presence alongside Cantwell, Lui, Whedon, and Hinds suggests HBO and Mundy are not treating Season 2 as a clean reboot. They are keeping at least one writer who already helped define the first season’s voice while adding other writers with distinct credits across comedy, drama, and genre work.
HBO’s renewal gap
HBO has not officially renewed Lanterns, so the room is developing a possible second season without the one decision that would lock the work into production. That is the friction in the story: creative labor is underway, but the corporate commitment is still missing.
Christopher Cantwell joined Lanterns in May as a writer and executive producer, which gives the room another active Season 1 link. Zack Whedon previously worked with him on Halt and Catch Fire, and Selwyn Seyfu Hinds created and ran Washing Black, so the team already has some working history and enough range to sketch out where a second season could go if HBO gives the go-ahead.
The immediate marker for readers is Sunday, October 4, when the Lanterns season 1 finale airs on HBO and streams on HBO Max. If HBO moves on Season 2 after that, the groundwork is already there; if it does not, the room remains proof that the series was being built with a future in mind, not merely a finish line.
