Sonay Kartal returns with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Wang Xinyu at the China Open

For Sonay Kartal, this was not just a first-round win at the China Open. It was a clear sign that a long layoff had not taken the edge off her game. Six months after going out injured against Elena Rybakina at Indian Wells, the 24-year-old returned to the WTA Tour and beat Wang Xinyu 6-3, 6-2 in Beijing.

That result mattered because Kartal has missed the majority of the season, including the past three Grand Slam tournaments, yet looked sharp from the start against the 31st seed. She had already beaten Andrea Lazaro Garcia on her return to tour duty, and this was a tougher test against a higher-ranked opponent. Instead of easing her way back, Kartal played with enough control and clarity to take the match in straight sets.

The numbers tell the story of a player who did not just survive, but played with purpose. Kartal finished with 12 winners and only 11 unforced errors, while Wang produced 24 unforced errors. That imbalance was decisive, especially in a match where Kartal made the more reliable choices in the bigger moments and did not allow the contest to become messy.

Her return is also important in a wider tournament sense. Kartal made the quarter-finals in Beijing in 2025, so there was already some evidence that this is a venue where she can compete well. After last month's Billie Jean King Cup Finals, she looked comfortable enough to say she was happy to be back and that she was looking to equal or even better her run from last year. On this evidence, that ambition does not sound unrealistic.

There was also a little more weight to this win because Kartal would have expected to face Elena Rybakina in the next round. Instead, Rybakina lost to Alina Charaeva, which changes the path ahead and shows how quickly a draw can open up at a tournament like this. Kartal cannot control that, of course, but she has done the part that matters most so far: she has returned to the WTA Tour and immediately looked like someone who belongs here.

Her own words fit the performance. Kartal said she was super happy to play and that it showed in her tennis, and that is hard to argue with after a 6-3, 6-2 win. More than anything, this was a comeback match that offered proof rather than promise. After six months out, Kartal did not just get through it. She made it count.
