UK Power Networks Says London Power Outage Hit 32 Postcodes

A London power outage began around 10.30am on Monday and left thousands of properties and businesses without electricity. UK Power Networks said an underground electricity cable fault caused the cut, which spread across 32 postcodes and disrupted parts of the capital.

Commuters at Liverpool Street faced blank information boards, while Great Northern said some platforms at Essex Road were left without any lights. Great Northern also said services would not stop at Essex Road because of the power cut, and told passengers to use Old Street or Highbury & Islington instead.

UK Power Networks and Great Northern

UK Power Networks said engineers were being rushed to local substations to analyse the network and return power to London. The company estimated supplies would be restored between midday and 1pm, giving affected homes, businesses and station users a window for when the disruption might end.

Great Northern posted on X: “Due to power cut affecting the platform lighting at Essex Road, services will not be stopping at this station,” and added: “You will need to travel via Old Street or Highbury & Islington to complete your journey and allow extra time to arrive at your destination.”

London Postcodes Affected

The outage covered parts of east and north London, along with the City of London and areas around Islington, Hackney and Westminster. That meant the cut was not limited to one street or one station; it reached homes, businesses and parts of the rail network at the same time.

The key question for those affected is whether all supplies were back within the midday to 1pm window. UK Power Networks gave that estimate while crews worked at local substations, but the facts available here stop at the restoration timetable, not the outcome.
