UK hospital admissions rose by 15% over the past week as American Covid symptoms linked to XFG spread through England. People in the UK are seeing more cases, with the latest UKHSA data showing the variant has become the dominant sequenced strain in England.
UK Covid cases rose by 28.6 per cent to 1,364 in the same period, while hospital admissions climbed to 261, a rise of 34 additional hospital admissions. The strain, also called Stratus and nicknamed American Covid, now makes up more than half of all sequenced positive samples in England.
England and the XFG spread
Dr Alex Allen, a consultant epidemiologist at the UK Health Security Agency, said the strains currently going around, including XFG, are closely related to strains that have been with us for over a year. That matters for people weighing whether this is a new threat or a familiar virus moving again through England during winter.
XFG has already become the most common variant in North America and has spread widely across the US. In England, the share of sequenced positive samples now above half shows how quickly one strain can move from circulating to dominant without a new wave of a different virus.
Dr Kaywaan Khan on symptoms
Dr Kaywaan Khan, a Harley Street GP and Founder of Hannah London Clinic, said people can still get features such as a cough or runny nose with the variant, but hoarseness is appearing more often. He said: "You can still get some of the same features as with the common cold, like a cough or runny nose, but we are seeing a lot more hoarseness of voice."
He added: "It's not a defining feature, you can experience this with the common cold too, but with Covid, you can get a bit of laryngitis and this hoarse voice." Khan also said: "You can get a razor-sharp sore throat, but also loss of taste. It's probably less common than the first strains, but that can indicate Covid."
UKHSA and the winter risk
Pharmacist Daniel Cheung wrote in NowPatient that hoarseness and a scratchy or raspy voice are the key and most noticeable symptoms of the Stratus variant. He said: "The key symptoms and most noticeable symptoms of the Stratus variant include hoarseness, scratchy/raspy voice, which is considered a unique symptom distinguishing it from other Covid strains."
Experts say the strains do not seem to pose any greater threat than previous types of Covid, even as cases and hospital admissions rise. For people in the UK, the immediate takeaway is practical: a hoarse voice, scratchy throat, cough, runny nose, or loss of taste should be treated as possible Covid-19, especially as winter puts more pressure on NHS hospital trusts.
The latest data point to continued monitoring rather than a new policy trigger, and the open question is how much of the rise in hospital admissions is being driven by XFG itself versus other seasonal illness in the UK.
