Too $hort apologized on Sunday, Oct. 4, after backlash over comments he made to TMZ about attending Sean "Diddy" Combs' release party. He said he was "a little insensitive" and added that he did not know "the full extent of the case."

"I want to thank all the people that called me yesterday," he said in an Instagram video, then added: "Text me, hit me up about this TMZ Puff Daddy thing. I was a little insensitive with my words." The veteran rap star was responding to criticism that followed his remarks about a possible celebration after Combs leaves prison.
Combs is serving a 50-month federal prison sentence after his October 2025 conviction on two counts of violating the Mann Act for transporting women across state lines for prostitution. According to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Prisons, his release date is January 21, 2028, and any public discussion of a homecoming party now lands against that clock, not a vague future date.
Cassie Ventura and the case
Too $hort said he did not know "that there were a lot of women who had claimed that they had been abused by Puff Daddy," and he pointed to Cassie Ventura, whose 2016 assault in a Miami hotel was captured on video. She later settled a civil suit for $20 million, and that suit detailed years of physical, sexual, and psychological abuse.
He also tried to narrow what he meant by attending a party, saying: "When I say I’m gonna go to his party, I was talking about the parties that he throws for his friends, not any party where it is fucking baby oil or some goddamn sexual shit." That distinction matters because he is not walking back the social relationship; he is walking back the tone and the assumptions behind it.
Combs' release date
Too $hort added a second layer of contradiction to the apology when he said, "I’ve been to dozens of his parties, and never once have I seen a naked person or a sexual act." He then said, "I hope that when my brother comes home, that he has grown because just in a short period of time of me dealing with this, I feel like I’ve grown a lot," followed by, "I’ve learned a lot, and I hope that when he comes home, that he’s not an abuser anymore."
The practical takeaway is simple: Too $hort is not canceling his connection to Combs, but he is publicly lowering the temperature around it after learning how directly Cassie Ventura and other women were implicated. The more urgent unanswered point is the exact TMZ comment that set off the backlash, because that is the line he is trying to redraw without cutting ties entirely.
