Jimmy McGovern’s Time series three begins on iPlayer and One on Sunday 11 October, with episode one landing at 6am and airing again at 9pm. The three-part return keeps the story inside a young offender institution, where the pressure sits on the people running it as much as the young men inside it.
Episode one starts the rollout; episode two follows on Monday 12 October and episode three lands on Sunday 18 October. That schedule turns the release into a short, tightly spaced run rather than a long weekly stretch, which should keep the drama’s central crisis in view across the full week.
McGovern’s 3x60’ return
Written by Jimmy McGovern and Samuel Bailey, the 3x60’ series is produced by Amanda Black and directed by Paul Whittington. Studios Fiction makes the drama for iPlayer and One, with BritBox for North America, and Northern Ireland Screen support behind it.
David Tennant said of McGovern’s writing: “I think that's what Jimmy has always been famous for, he puts ordinary people in moments of extremis and sort of lets them be, lets them unfold.” That is the right lens for this run: the appeal is not spectacle, but the pressure-cooker setup and the way it forces choices in public view.
Bailey and Marie-Louise
Prison Chaplain Marie-Louise arrives having lost her faith, and she clashes with veteran officer Bailey when tragedy strikes in the prison. Bailey is also in the middle of his own crisis, and he knows more about the circumstances that led to the major incident.
That gives the series its sharpest pressure point. Bailey is not just guarding the institution; he is carrying information that could change how the incident is understood, while Marie-Louise is stepping into the same space without the certainty she once had.
Peter, James and Bobby
Peter and James, two teenage young offenders, face the first weeks and months of incarceration under strain. James is dealing with his broken parents after an unforgivable act of violence, while Peter may tell the truth about the death of an innocent man.
Their friendship looks set to pull the story forward. If Peter and James shift each other’s path, Time series three stops being just a prison drama and becomes a test of who can still choose honesty when silence is easier.
Bobby, another officer in the institution, ends up knowing more than the authorities do after the first episode’s incident. That leaves the series with a clean, uncomfortable question: what exactly happened, and what did Bailey know about it?
