when is bake off on? The Great British Bake Off is back on screens tonight at 8pm on Channel 4 for its third episode, and the new season’s twist is Audience Choice Week. Twelve bakers are now moving from the first two weeks of cakes and biscuits into a format shaped by viewer ideas.
Nigella Lawson and Paul Hollywood
Nigella Lawson, a new judge on the season, said the wearable bake challenge went better than expected. Paul Hollywood, the returning judge, described the relative-led challenge as one that helped the bakers settle: “It was a nice idea, that [the relative challenge]. I think it really worked because you could see the partnership, and they did relax a little bit more and confidence went up, and the confidence was still with them afterwards when their family member had gone or friend had gone.”
Audience ideas into Bake Off
Earlier this summer, the official GBBO website invited viewers to submit ideas for new challenges before filming. Those ideas were discussed with the Bake Off team and judges, then developed for this season, which makes Audience Choice Week more than a theme label: it turns the audience into part of the challenge design, at least before the ovens start ticking down.
Wearable bakes and mystery boxes
The episode’s three tasks make that input visible in different ways. The signature challenge asked for a cheesecake made with help from a loved one, the technical sent bakers to a mystery box of ingredients they had not seen before filming, and the final challenge asked for a bake that could be worn.
Nigella said, “You know, you're never going to get an even standard with everyone, but you know, they really do pull it out of the bag when they need to.” That uneven standard is the point of the format: viewer-shaped challenges can widen the range of results, but they also give the judges a cleaner read on who adapts fastest under pressure.
Tonight’s 8pm slot on Channel 4 is the practical answer for anyone asking when is bake off on, and it also marks the first real test of whether Audience Choice Week can keep the season from feeling mechanical. If the audience is going to help set the brief, the show has to prove the brief still produces a workable Bake Off hour.
