Connor Hellebuyck Trade talks intensify as Jets goalie is suspended

Connor Hellebuyck is still technically a member of the Winnipeg Jets, but the situation has already moved well beyond a normal offseason standoff. He wanted a trade, did not report to training camp and is now suspended while the Jets try to find a deal.

The timing matters because Hellebuyck is not just another roster piece. He carries an $8.5 million cap hit, which makes any move more complicated, especially with a no-move clause in the picture. That clause limits the Jets’ flexibility and helps explain why a deal has not come together quickly.

Why Carolina has entered the discussion

Sportsnet NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman suggested that the Carolina Hurricanes could be part of a three-team trade framework, with Alexander Nikishin as the key asset Carolina might offer. The Hurricanes also have more than $10 million in cap space according to Puckpedia, which gives them the ability to at least explore a move that would be difficult for other clubs to manage.

That does not mean a deal is close, but it does show the type of structure that may be required. A star goaltender with a big cap hit, a no-move clause and multiple teams involved is not the kind of transaction that gets done quickly. If the Jets are serious about moving Hellebuyck, they may need a partner with both cap room and a trade asset good enough to satisfy Winnipeg.

The Jets have already shown they are willing to plan ahead in goal. Before the season, Winnipeg picked up Clay Stevenson off waivers, another sign that the team is managing its options while the Hellebuyck situation remains unresolved.

For now, the key takeaway is simple: Hellebuyck wants a trade, is not at camp and remains suspended while the Jets work through one of the most complicated goalie trade situations of the offseason.
