Rob Sand leads 52-41 entering Iowa Governor Debate

Rob Sand enters the Iowa governor debate on Tuesday night with a lead in the latest public polling, and the race has tightened around whether he can hold it under debate pressure. The Democratic State Auditor is facing Zach Lahn while Iowa voters weigh a contest to replace Republican Governor Kim Reynolds.

A New York Times/Siena University poll conducted from September 22 through October 1 found Sand ahead 52 percent to 41 percent among 606 likely voters. A poll from September 24 to 28 showed him leading 53 percent to 44 percent, while a Marist survey from September 17 to 20 put him at 54 percent to 42 percent and gave him a 57 percent to 33 percent advantage among Independents in the Marist.

Those surveys follow a month in which Sand also led in an Emerson College/Nexstar poll, a YouGov survey and a co/efficient survey. The co/efficient poll, from September 14 to 16, was the closest of the group at 46 percent to 42 percent among 831 likely voters, still leaving Sand ahead by four points.

The timing gives Tuesday night unusual weight. Iowa has not elected a Democratic governor since Chet Culver in 2006, and President Donald Trump won Iowa by more than 13 points in 2024, even as Republicans dominate the state’s congressional delegation and state government. That makes the debate one of the few remaining chances for Lahn to narrow a race that polling now shows Sand controlling.

Kalshi and Polymarket

Prediction markets are leaning the same direction. As of Tuesday morning, Kalshi traders were pricing a Democratic victory at roughly 89 percent and a Republican win at about 11 percent, while Polymarket was giving Sand about an 85 percent chance and Lahn around 15 percent.

Lahn’s campaign is rejecting that picture. His spokesman told Newsweek, “The polls and prediction markets are wrong, just like they were in the primary,” and said Sand was “fraud” while looking forward to “exposing.” The spokesman also said, “From day one, Zach has run on solving Iowa’s cancer crisis and fixing our water quality issues, keeping Iowa’s kids in Iowa, saving our family farms, and making public education #1 in the nation again.”

Election Day in Iowa

The debate now gives Iowa voters a live contrast before Election Day, with Sand trying to preserve a polling lead that has ranged from four to 12 points across the recent surveys. If Lahn cuts into that margin on Tuesday night, the race gets closer to a test of whether the recent polling average can still hold through the final stretch.
