Health is the main difference for Adou Thiero — and it could shape his Lakers role

For Adou Thiero, the biggest difference this offseason has been simple: he is healthy.

During Lakers Media Day, the second-year forward said that being available has changed the feel of his development after an injury-filled first NBA season. Last summer, Thiero was recovering from knee surgery, which kept him out of Summer League and left him unavailable to start the regular season. This time around, he said he has been able to get on the floor, compete this week in training camp and build his game through consistent summer work.

"The main difference is I’m healthy," Thiero said. "I got a chance to go out and compete this week in training camp."

Availability comes first

Thiero made it clear that the offseason focus was not only about getting stronger, but also about making sure his body could hold up. He said he spent the summer working on his body and trying to stay on the floor so he could actually play.

"That’s what I’ve been working on this whole summer, just trying to make sure my body is right, figuring that out, and trying to stay on the floor so I can actually get out there and play," Thiero said. "Availability is the best ability, so just taking care of my body because there’s no opportunity without availability."

That is the practical part of Thiero’s offseason story. His first NBA season was limited by injury problems, and the Lakers are now getting a better look at what he can do when he is healthy enough to participate consistently. For a young player trying to earn trust, that matters as much as anything else.

Defensive role remains the clear target

Thiero also described the role he wants to fill if he earns minutes. He said he is trying to become a point-of-attack defender, the kind of player who can handle the best perimeter threat on the other side and make life difficult every night.

"Just going out and playing hard every chance I get," Thiero said. "Being that point-of-attack defender, being able to guard the best guy on the other team, stay in front and just make their night very difficult."

He said that work has been the focus since Summer League, where he felt he got better in each game, and then into summer workouts and pickup runs. Thiero said he has been learning the offense more, understanding what his role would be and taking more pride on the defensive end.

"To start off, building off of Summer League. I feel like I had a pretty solid Summer League, got better within each game we played," Thiero said. "Then taking that into summer workouts and just coming in working on different things, understanding our offense a little more and what my role would be on this team. Just taking more pride on the defensive end because I’m trying to become that point-of-attack defender guarding the best guys every night."

Why this matters for the Lakers

The short version is that Thiero’s path to a rotation spot depends on staying on the court long enough to show what he can do. The Lakers do not need mystery here; they need availability, effort and a clear role. Thiero appears to know that.

He said the healthy offseason has already helped his confidence, because he has been able to play pickup every day and carry over what he worked on in individual workouts into live competition.

"It definitely gives me a lot more confidence on top of the confidence I’ve been building this whole summer," Thiero said. "Just being able to be out there and play since I’m healthy, so just playing pick up every day and trying to incorporate everything we worked on from individual workouts in the summer and adding that to our pickup games and seeing how that’s paying off. I’d say just building my confidence in myself."

That is the central storyline for Thiero entering the next phase of the season. The skill focus is important, but the health piece may be the biggest one. If he can stay available, the Lakers can better evaluate whether his defense and energy can translate into a real rotation opportunity.
