The Texans are only four games into the 2026 season, but DeMeco Ryans is already making a move that says plenty about how he sees the state of his defense. With Houston off to a 0-4 start, Ryans said Wednesday that he will take over defensive play-calling duties from Matt Burke, a change meant to steady a unit that has repeatedly let games slip late.

It is a notable shift because this has not been a long-term problem hidden by bad luck. Houston’s defense was the No. 1 unit in 2025 and finished No. 6 in 2024, so the standard was already established under Ryans and Burke. But in 2026, the Texans have looked far less secure in the moments that matter most.

In Week 1, Houston allowed a seven-play, 96-yard touchdown drive in the final three minutes of a 36-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills. In Week 3, the Texans gave up 29 yards in six plays, enough for the Colts to get into Spencer Shrader’s range for a game-winning field-goal attempt. Those are different finishes, but the same problem: Houston has been vulnerable when games tighten and the pressure rises.

A move meant to fix communication

Ryans framed the change as his responsibility first, not Burke’s failure. He said that if there is a communication issue, it starts with him, and that he wants to make sure the defense is getting the best chance possible to win its first game. He also said the move is no slight against Burke, calling his work outstanding, while acknowledging that tough decisions come with the job of head coach.

That matters because the Texans are not changing play-callers due to a total collapse in defensive talent. They are changing because the late-game details have been off, and the head coach believes the cleanest way to address that is to control the calls himself. In other words, this is less about rewriting the identity of the defense than about trying to restore order inside it.

The urgency is obvious. The Texans visit the 0-4 Tennessee Titans on Sunday in Week 5, and that puts immediate pressure on a team that is already fighting history as well as its own record. Only one NFL team has ever reached the postseason after a 0-4 start, so Houston is dealing with more than a slow opening. It is trying to keep a season from drifting into a hole that almost no team has ever escaped.

Burke has been part of a defense that recently ranked among the league’s best, but the early returns in 2026 have forced Ryans to act. If the change works, it will be remembered as a necessary correction. If it does not, the Texans will have to answer even bigger questions about a team that has already lost too many games in too many familiar ways.
