This was not a fluke, and it was not an accident. The Golden State Valkyries beat the Las Vegas Aces 71-60 in Game 1 on Sunday by doing something brutally effective: they made the game slow, awkward and miserable for a team with a far stronger offense.
That is the uncomfortable truth for Las Vegas. When the Valkyries can drag a game into their preferred territory, they are not just competitive — they are dangerous. Sunday’s matchup was played at roughly 71.5 possessions, a pace that suited Golden State perfectly and helped hold the Aces to their lowest point total of the season.
Control the tempo, control the game
The Valkyries finished this season 15th out of 15 in pace at 74.5 possessions per 40 minutes, so none of this should have come as a surprise. Natalie Nakase’s team has built an identity around suppressing tempo and limiting chances, and Game 1 showed exactly why that matters. The Aces, with three elite scorers, are built to punish teams that let the game breathe. Golden State did the opposite.
That is why the 71-60 scoreline matters more than a simple opener result. It was a tactical statement. The Valkyries did not need to outgun Las Vegas; they needed to reduce the number of possessions and turn the game into a grind. They did that, and the Aces never found the rhythm they wanted.
There is a difference between playing slowly and playing passively. Golden State were not passive. They were disciplined, deliberate and fully committed to making every Aces possession feel like work. Once the game settled into that shape, Las Vegas looked far more ordinary than its reputation suggests.
That does not mean the series is decided. But it does mean the Aces have a clear problem to solve. If they cannot speed this up, or at least stop Golden State from dictating the terms, they will keep running into the same wall. Pace is not a side issue here. Pace is the story.
Game 1 made that plain enough. The Valkyries wanted a low-possession fight, got it, and walked away with a win that should make everyone understand exactly how they plan to beat the Aces again.
