Mac Jones Buccaneers Trade Rumors: 49ers asked for a second-round pick as Tampa Bay searches for quarterback help

The Mac Jones Buccaneers trade rumors have landed because Tampa Bay’s quarterback situation has become too uncomfortable to ignore. With Baker Mayfield sidelined by a thumb injury and the team already off to a 0-4 start, a move for help under center is now being discussed as a way to stabilise the season.

That is the argument Alex Kay made on October 6, when he suggested the Buccaneers should call the San Francisco 49ers about Jones. In his view, the lack of reliable depth at quarterback has left Tampa Bay in a dire position heading into Week 5, and the team may need to act quickly if it wants to avoid letting the season drift further away.

Why Mac Jones is in the conversation

Kay pointed to the failed backup plan as the biggest problem. With Jalon Daniels at the reins, the Buccaneers “unsurprisingly collapsed” in a must-win game against the Green Bay Packers, and the performance only sharpened the sense that Tampa Bay cannot simply wait for the situation to fix itself.

Kay also noted that Daniels was not completely overwhelmed, but the numbers told the story: a 19-of-27 outing with one touchdown and two interceptions still looked raw for a team that needed cleaner quarterback play. In that sense, the trade pitch is less about luxury and more about survival.

The idea of Jones as a solution is built around his recent value as a short-term starter. Kay said Jones “was able to save the Niners’ 2025 season when Brock Purdy went down for an extended stretch in the opener,” leading San Francisco to five wins in eight starts. That kind of insurance policy is exactly what Tampa Bay is missing right now.

What would the 49ers want?

The reported hurdle is cost. The 49ers are said to have a high asking price for Jones, with a second-round pick mentioned as the benchmark in the trade discussion. That would force Tampa Bay to decide whether fixing the quarterback room is worth paying a premium so early in the season.

Kristopher Knox added more detail to the case for Jones, noting that he “went 5-3 as a starter while throwing for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns and six interceptions in 2025.” Knox described him as “a terrific insurance policy for a team with championship aspirations,” while also pointing out that Jones is set to be a 2027 free agent.

That creates the tension at the heart of the rumor. Jones may be useful now, but Knox also said he is “almost certain to depart for a starting opportunity next year,” which means the market may only get more expensive if San Francisco waits.

What comes next for Tampa Bay?

For the Buccaneers, the question is no longer whether quarterback help would be useful. It is whether they can afford to keep waiting while the season slips further into crisis. If Baker Mayfield is not ready soon, and if the current backup plan cannot steady the team, then a move like this may start to look less like a luxury and more like a necessity.

Whether Tampa Bay is willing to meet the 49ers’ asking price is another matter. But after a 0-4 start, the pressure to explore every option is only going to rise.
