James Nelson-Joyce Returns in This City Is Ours: Series 2 Start Date

James Nelson-Joyce is back in This City Is Ours: Series 2, with setting Sunday 25 October for the drama’s return on iPlayer. The new trailer also puts Shaun Evans and Álvaro Morte in view, while the first series’ audience figures explain why the schedule move matters.

All 8x60 episodes will be available from that date on iPlayer, and the series will air on Sunday and Monday nights at 9pm on One. That gives viewers a same-day streaming option and a linear run, a two-track release pattern that keeps the show visible across the week rather than letting it vanish after one drop.

James Nelson-Joyce and Hannah Onslow

James Nelson-Joyce returns as Michael Kavanagh, with Hannah Onslow back as Diana Williams. The first series launched in March 2025 and went on to receive BAFTA Television Award nominations for Best Drama and Leading Actor for James Nelson-Joyce, a sign that the show already has both awards traction and a returning audience.

The numbers back that up. The series has drawn an average of 6.2 million viewers to date, the first episode pulled more than 8.3 million viewers, and that opening more than quadrupled its initial overnight figure of 1.9 million. Almost three million people streamed the finale before its One transmission that May, which helps explain why the broadcaster is bringing the new run back with a fresh trailer and artwork.

Shaun Evans in Spain

Shaun Evans appears for the first time in the trailer as former gangster Ozzie Thompson, while Álvaro Morte plays Felipe Guzman, a member of the Colombian cartel and the younger brother of Ricardo. Because Ricardo was murdered at the end of series one, the new trailer is not selling a reset; it is pushing continuity, with the story still tied to the damage left behind by the first run.

Michael and Diana have barely arrived in Spain when they are dragged back into the questions around Ricardo’s death, while tensions keep rising among the remaining gang members in Liverpool. An old school gangster from Ronnie’s era, recently out of prison, is also seeking compensation from the firm, which adds another pressure point to a story already balancing Spain, Liverpool and a murder inquiry.

Left Bank Pictures for

Stephen Butchard created and wrote the series and returns for series two, with Robbie O'Neill writing a further episode. Left Bank Pictures produced the show for iPlayer and One, Sony Pictures Television handles international distribution, and the executive team includes Andy Harries, Rebecca Hodgson, Sian McWilliams, Stephen Butchard, Saul Dibb and Jo McClellan.

Simon Maloney is the series producer and Nathan Juckes is the block two producer, with Saul Dibb, John Hayes and Chris Baugh directing. For viewers, the practical change is simple: the next run arrives on Sunday 25 October, and anyone who wants to follow the story in full can watch it from the start on iPlayer or tune in on One at 9pm. The unanswered pressure point is the one built into the trailer itself — how the new series deals with Ricardo’s death and the demand from Ronnie’s old guard.
