The eve of the derby-ul Ardealului brought an unpleasant story before the football did. Marius Șumudică said he was spat on while walking in Cluj, an incident he described as disgusting and one that added tension to the build-up to CFR - U Cluj.
According to Șumudică, the episode happened when a car stopped near a pedestrian crossing, the window was lowered and he was hit by what he described as a small piece of biscuit dough on his clothes. The CFR coach, who is 55 years old, said he did not react in the moment, but made clear that the gesture left him frustrated.
His reaction was blunt. Șumudică said he had not experienced anything like this in București and called the incident ugly and unacceptable. He also insisted that he has never insulted U Cluj and would not do so, even while defending his own club before the derby. That balance matters: he was angry, but he did not try to turn the moment into a broader attack on the rival.
A derby played under added pressure
The timing makes the story even sharper. CFR and U Cluj were scheduled to meet on Thursday, 8 October, at 20:30 in Gruia, and the match already carried weight beyond the usual local rivalry. CFR entered the game in 8th place with 13 points after nine matches, while Cristiano Bergodi's team sat in 5th place with 15 points.
That table picture gives the derby a practical edge as well as an emotional one. U Cluj had the better start, but CFR were close enough to turn one result into a meaningful swing. In that context, Șumudică's comments are not just a complaint about an isolated act; they are part of a derby atmosphere that is already loaded with consequence.
He also tried to draw a line between criticism and hostility. Șumudică said he would applaud if U Cluj won and would shake hands with them, arguing that a victory on the pitch would be the proper way to settle the match. That is the football point buried inside the incident: the rivalry should be decided by the game, not by what happens on the street before kickoff.
For a derby that was already important in the standings, this off-field episode only raised the temperature. The result on Thursday in Gruia would still matter most, but the build-up now carries a story about respect, restraint and how quickly a local rivalry can spill beyond the pitch.
