Jabari Walker made an early case for more responsibility in the Philadelphia 76ers’ first preseason game, finishing with 11 points and 11 rebounds in just over 19 minutes against the New York Knicks.
That kind of production stands out on any night, but it matters even more for a team already dealing with frontcourt availability concerns. Less than five minutes into the game, Ariel Hukporti suffered a non-contact injury and did not return, adding to the sense that the Sixers may need someone to step forward quickly.
Why Walker’s role suddenly looks more important
Walker is undersized for a nominal center, but he showed the traits that can still make him useful in that spot. He brought tenacity on the glass and enough mobility on defense to stay involved in the action.
He also gave the Sixers a little bit of floor spacing, knocking down 3 of 5 three-pointers. For a player competing for backup center minutes, that is exactly the sort of early preseason signal that can change the conversation.
The context around him is what gives the performance extra weight. With Ariel Hukporti leaving the game early, Adem Bona still recovering, and Dominick Barlow absent, Philadelphia’s margin inside is already thinner than it would like.
That does not mean one preseason game settles anything. But it does mean Jabari Walker has made a strong first impression at a time when the Sixers need options in the frontcourt, and need them fast.
